Minecraft to Join Microsoft

Mojang's team is joining Microsoft Studios, which includes the studios behind the blockbuster franchises Halo, Forza, Fable and more. Microsoft's investments in mobile and cloud technology will allow Minecraft players to benefit from richer and faster worlds and more powerful development tools, and more opportunities to connect with the Minecraft community. In the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will acquire Mojang for $2.5 billion. Mojang: Minecraft has grown from a simple game into a project of monumental significance. While we're extremely proud of what Minecraft has grown into, it was never Notch's goal to make it this massive. As you might already know, Notch is the creator of Minecraft and the majority shareholder of Mojang. He has decided that he would not want to assume the responsibility of running a business with such global importance. In the last few years, he's made attempts to tackle smaller projects however the pressure of managing Minecraft became too for him to handle. The only option was to sell Mojang. He'll continue to do cool stuff though. Don't be worried. There are only a few potential buyers who have the resources to develop Minecraft to the size it deserves. We've worked closely with Microsoft since 2012 and have been impressed with their continued dedication to our game and its development. We're confident that Minecraft will continue to grow in a phenomenal way. Markus Notch Persson: I don't think of myself as an actual game developer. I make games for fun , and because I am passionate about programming and games. But I don’t create games with the goal of making them a huge hit. I also don’t intend to make a difference in the world. Minecraft certainly became a massive hit, and people are saying it's changed the game. minecraft servers I never intended for it to do either. It's flattering, and it's interesting to see it slowly rise into the public spotlight. I'm not sure what to think of this. Update (2014-09-19): Josh Centers: Minecraft is the most mind-blowing game I have ever played. It's a part sandbox game part world-builder, part exploration game and part farming simulator and a role-playing game. It has an conclusion of sorts (that you must find on your own), but it never truly ends. You can play alone or with others and even run your own Minecraft server and invite just your friends to join it. It's all too easy to spend thousands of hours in Minecraft and millions of people already have. Acquisition Game Microsoft Minecraft 3 Comments It seems obvious to me. Microsoft have decided that if Apple goes hi-res with their retina-based screens and operating system the only way Microsoft can differentiate itself is to bet the whole company on red and go lo-lo-res. Imagine Windows Explorer with folder icons that have a resolution of 8x8. :-) I don't know what to do about this. Minecraft is the biggest thing to happen to games since Pokemon. Everybody plays the game, and if Minecraft is well managed it will remain one of the most significant and popular franchises for at least another decade. Microsoft considers games to be very important, not just because they're a major driver for new Windows PCs and Windows licenses, and also because of the Xbox. Microsoft has tried to create games that were a bit like Minecraft in the past (Viva Pinata, Kodu, Project Spark) and have more or less failed. Sony already owns Little Pig Planet, and Nintendo is entering the creative games that allow players to create things instead of just consuming stuff field with Mario Maker. They're right, I think.
